Archive for January, 2007

As even digital music revenue growth falters because of rampant file-sharing by consumers, the major record labels are moving closer to releasing music on the Internet with no copying restrictions–a step they once vowed never to take. Executives of several technology companies meeting here at Midem, the annual global trade fair for the music industry, said over the weekend that at least one of the four major record companies could move toward the sale of unrestricted digital files in the MP3 format within months. Most independent record labels already sell tracks digitally compressed in the MP3 format, which can be downloaded, e-mailed or copied to computers, cell phones, portable music players and compact discs without limit. The independents see providing songs in MP3 partly as a way of generating publicity that could lead to future sales. For the major recording companies, however, selling in the MP3 format would be a capitulation to the power of the Internet, which has destroyed their control over the worldwide distribution of music.

| Release Date: 03/28/2007 By Garnett Lee From the screenshots we knew Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars looked spot on as a modern graphical update of the series. Hands-on time reassured us that the C&C-style of real-time strategy play makes the jump to 2007 equally well. Some will undoubtedly brand it a throwback, but fans (and it’s sure to make many new ones) should revel in this renaissance of the classic, and yes, that means you better be ready for a rush. |

As a quick catch up, this installment aims to wrap up the trilogy that began all the way back in 1995 with Command & Conquer: Tiberium Dawn. An alien substance, named tiberium, has been spreading across the Earth, rendering it uninhabitable. This crisis splintered humanity into two factions: the Global Defense Initiative, which represents the superpowers and corporate/industrial "big brother" sort of society that aims to save everyone, and the Brotherhood of Nod, a renegade, terrorist-like organization led by the enigmatic Kane. This third chapter introduces a new alien race to the mix. Many predicted this turn, and their arrival could either doom or unite the world. EA remains tight-lipped about the aliens, not wanting to spoil the story. That said, our guesses about their hand in seeding the planet with tiberium received a not so subtle nudge-nudge-wink-wink from producer Amer Ajami. Whether they want the planet, or just its ability to grow tiberium remains unclear. Either way, they’ve been waiting, parked on the dark side of Neptune, for harvest time, and now it’s come. Posted by John JCal Callaham on Tuesday January 16, 2007 The newest issue of Game Informer magazine has the first info on BlackSite: Area 51, the upcoming sequel to Midway’s 2005 console-PC sci-fi first person shooter Area 51. Developed once again by Midway’s Austin studio (which they bought while the original Area 51 was under development), the sequel will be using Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 as its graphical base. |

It will also be more serious in tone than the somewhat campy original game with references to Iraq, global warming and other political issues mixed in with the alien conspiracy storyline. Look for new alien weapons to be mixed in with conventional FPS firearms along with an advanced squad based tactical system as well. The Game Informer article states that BlackSite: Area 51 is due for release this summer. Check out info here–>Link |

Cabler acquires rights to Martin’s ‘Ice’
HBO has acquired the rights to turn George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy series "A Song of Fire & Ice" into a dramatic series to be written and exec produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. "Fire" is the first TV project for Benioff ("Troy") and Weiss ("Halo") and will shoot in Europe or New Zealand. Benioff and Weiss will write every episode of each season together save one, which the author (a former TV writer) will script. The series will begin with the 1996 first book, "A Game of Thrones," and the intention is for each novel (they average 1,000 pages each) to fuel a season’s worth of episodes. Martin has nearly finished the fifth installment, but won’t complete the seven-book cycle until 2011. The author will co-exec produce the series along with Management 360′s Guymon Casady and Created By’s Vince Gerardis. Martin’s series has drawn comparisons to J.R.R. Tolkien, because both are period epics set in imagined lands. But Martin has eschewed Tolkien’s good-vs.-evil theme in favor of flawed characters from seven noble families. The book has a decidedly adult bent, with sex and violence comparable to series like "Rome" and "Deadwood."
