Social-networking sites like Facebook and Twitter can expect more attention from cybercriminals in 2010, according to a new report released Tuesday by McAfee Labs. Also at risk are users of Adobe Systems products including Acrobat Reader and Flash. And move over Microsoft; the security firm predicts that Google’s Chrome OS will “create another opportunity for malware writers to prey on users.” The company also anticipates smarter and more dangerous Trojans that “follow the money,” as well as a “significant trend toward a more distributed and resilient botnet infrastructure that relies much more on peer-to-peer technologies.” In a recorded interview (scroll down for audio) David Marcus, McAfee Labs’ director of security research and communications, said that he expects “an explosion of Facebook and other services targeted by cybercriminals.” In addition to malware like Koobface that spreads among Facebook users’ friends list, Marcus expects an increase in rogue Facebook applications. “When you click yes to ‘do you want to allow this application to access your Facebook account,’ you’re giving that application access to all the data in your Facebook account,” he said. Facebook vets the third-party applications that it distributes, but rouge developers are finding other ways to get people to install unauthorized apps.

Adobe Systems’ Flash and Acrobat Reader products will become the preferred targets for criminal hackers in 2010, surpassing Microsoft Office applications, a security vendor predicted this week. “Cybercriminals have long picked on Microsoft products due to their popularity. In 2010, we anticipate Adobe software, especially Acrobat Reader and Flash, will take the top spot,” security vendor McAfee said in its “2010 Threat Predictions” report (PDF). Hackers usually target the most widely used products in order to achieve the maximum impact. For a long time that has made Microsoft their primary target. But the software giant has tightened security in its recent OS releases, leading hackers to look for additional targets.

Holiday shoppers brought good cheer to e-commerce retailers, spending $27 billion online from November 1 through December 24, a 5 percent jump over last year, ComScore reported Wednesday. The period from Black Friday through Christmas Eve was also bright and merry as sales grew by around 3.5 percent, even after adjusting for an additional shopping day this year. consumer electronics proved to be the hottest selling category, rising 20 percent. Larger retailers outpaced smaller vendors thanks in part to their use of free shipping and marketing via social-networking sites, said ComScore. The growth in this year’s online holiday sales showed improvement over 2008, when sales dropped by 3 percent. Results were likely helped by a snowstorm that blanketed the East Coast the weekend of December 19-20, forcing many shoppers to pick up those last-minute gifts online.

What is the iSlate? There is no official statement from Apple yet, as usual. Going by the rumors, it is expected to be a 10.1 inch ultra thin machine. But what is it? Is it an e-book reader? Is it a Tablet PC? Or, is it a Netbook? Let’s speculate. Apple may not invest that many resources in an e-book reader. But, if we look at the trends this year Amazon claimed that Kindle was the most preferred gift. Are people switching from books to e-books? How much interest should Apple take in this segment? Look at Apple. What is it? A computer company? No. Apple is today world’s most popular consumer electronics company — they have the most popular music player — the iPods. They have the world’s most popular mobile phone — The iPhone. And, they also have the world’s most good looking computers. They have a dominating position in the online music market with iTunes Store as well as in the application segment with an online Apps Store. Why not come out with a device which is light, thin and have a decent display which can work as an e-book reader; add features of a Tablet (Apple already has the multi-touch technology) and make it a Tablet PC. Now, what else are Netbooks but handy, light weight browser centric computers with all the other multimedia capabilities? Beware what you wish for! You have a device with all these capabilities!

Nvidia is expected to delay its next-generation DirectX 11-supporting GPU (Fermi) to March, 2010, while AMD will launch more GPUs in January-February, according to sources from graphics card makers. Nvidia originally scheduled to launch Fermi in November 2009, but was delayed until CES in January 2010 due to defects, according to market rumors. However, the company recently notified graphics card makers that the official launch will now be in March 2010, the sources noted. Nvidia plans to launch a 40nm GDDR5 memory-based Fermi-GF100 GPU in March, and will launch a GF104 version in the second quarter to target the high-end market with its GeForce GTX295/285/275/260, the sources pointed out. For performance level markets, Nvidia will allow its GeForce GTS250, GT240/220 and 9800GT/9500GT defend against AMD’s Radeon HD 5770/5750, 4870/4850 and 4670/4650. For the mainstream market, Nvidia will mainly push its GeForce 210. Meanwhile, AMD will launch 40nm Radeon HD 5670/5570 (Redwood) and HD 5450 (Cedar) GPUs at the end of January or in February 2010, the sources noted.
