Build it and they will come

KOREAN GIANT Samsung Electronics has proudly announced that it has started mass producing 3D televisions at a time when most of us are still saying, “What’s the point if you have to wear those silly glasses?” With the television industry, if not audiences, going crazy for 3D TVs at the moment, the firm will mass produce the panels needed for LED and LCD televisions, possibly prompting the owners of warehouse facilities in South Korea to rejoice and proclaim the end of the recession. “Recently, 3D displays have captured the industry spotlight,” said Wonkie Chang, president of the LCD business at Samsung. “Samsung Electronics aims to lead the global 3D TV panel market in pioneering panel mass production for 3D LED and LCD TVs.”

IT shops jump for joy as Apple delivers a real dud in the iPad
By Randall C. Kennedy January 28, 2010
I’ll admit it. I was sweating a bit while I waited for the Apple iPad event to get under way yesterday. There were so many expectations attached to this product. People were calling it a “game changer,” a once-in-a-decade device that would redefine how we interact with technology. And what if they were right? What if my worst fears of an impending Apple tablet apocalypse came true? Fortunately, it was all much ado about nothing. The Apple iPad arrived, and the IT community sighed collectively in relief. This was no game-changing device. This was no paradigm-shifting über-product. This was an iPod on steroids — a glorified multimedia player complete with single-tasking OS, limited connectivity options (sorry, Verizon fans), and virtually no traditional I/O capabilities. Talk about dodging a bullet! Apple could have hit one out of the park if it had actually innovated with the iPad. Instead, it rehashed a bunch of iPod/iPhone bits, spread them out even more thinly across its much ballyhooed industrial-design surface (so long, iPhone camera!), and offered them up as something new and different.

Technologist Long Zheng’s watchful eye caught a clue that points to the likely existence of an upcoming Zune phone, according to blog post he published this week. A Zune software update (version 4.2.202.0) includes a USB device driver package that references hardware IDs for an as of yet unknown Microsoft Zune product. Zheng noted that USB body regulations forbid vendors from masking devices IDs, so the device must be from Microsoft. There are three variants of the ID that may point to different models, he added. There has been a lot of speculation about whether or not Microsoft will make its own device. I was in the “yes” camp over a year ago, because I believe that Microsoft will attempt to maintain parity with Apple’s product mix. It acquired Sidekick creator Danger Inc., and tasked executive Roz Ho (former head of its Mac business unit) to absorb Danger into its Entertainment and Devices division.
