Flogging motherboards on the back of new tech

Motherboard maker Gigabyte appears to have been making a killing on the back of being one of the first to release USB 3.0 based cards. The outfit has been releasing USB 3.0 powered motherboards for several months and using NEC’s USB-IF certified chipset. NEC does not make that many of the Chipsets and Gigabyte has been taking most of them. For every 3 USB 3.0 chips produced by NEC one of them is headed towards Gigabyte. However it seems to have paid off. Gigabyte managed to survive the recession and is on its way to make serious money on USB 3.0′s back. The question is how long can Gigabyte continue to make money on the technology. Its adoption has been slow and other motherboard makers think it has a limited shelf life.

AMD and Intel price details are leaked

RIVAL X86 CHIPMAKERS AMD and Intel are both fuming after pricing information on their latest chips has been printed by the Far Eastern trade press. Although it is not as if the chips have been handed to hacks in brown paper envelopes. The chips were seen on sale from e-retailers. The prices leaked include AMD’s forthcoming six-core challengers dubbed Phenom II X6 and Intel’s Gulftown six-core Core i7-980X. It looks like three Phenom II X6 processors will become available in the second quarter of 2010. These will be the 2.6GHz 1035T, the 2.8GHz 1055T, and the 3GHz 1075T. Pricing for the 1055T is about $199, while a previously unannounced 3.2GHz 1090T Black Edition will cost $295. Another six-core AMD processor, the 1095T, will become available in 4Q 2010. Meanwhile Chipzilla will release a dual-core Core i5-680, which, at $284, will cost nearly as much as a six-core AMD chip. Intel also will release a quad-core Core i7-870, which is a lower-voltage CPU at 82 Watts TDP priced at $560.

Nvidia’s initial batch of GeForce GTX 480/470-based graphics cards will have fewer cores than the originally expected 512 due to low 40nm yield at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), according to sources from graphics card makers. Since TSMC’s 40nm yield currently is still lower than 50%, Nvidia will block some of the graphics cores with problems on the card. As a result, the GeForce GTX 480 will only have 480 cores and GTX 470 only 448, the sources noted. The sources pointed out that Nvidia will start selling its GeForce GTX 400 series on March 26, but volume shipments will not start until April 6. The sources also noted that GeForce GTX 480 will be priced at US$499 and GeForce GTX 470 at US$349.

Bahrain-based retailer Advanti Online appears to have revealed pricing for AMD’s upcoming hexa-core Phenom II X6 processors, codenamed Thuban. Citing AMD as its source, the retailer’s Facebook page lists pricing information as follows: Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition: 125(W), AM3 Socket, 9MB Cache, 3.2 GHz Freq @ 295 USD 1055T: 125(W), AM3 Socket, 9MB Cache, 2.8 GHz Freq @ 199 USD. AMD hasn’t commented on the speculation, but the supposed pricing suggests the Phenom II X6 parts will certainly be worthy of consideration, and could bring about a new level of performance-per-pound. The leak comes just days after motherboard manufacturer GIGABYTE let slip clock speeds for AMD hexa-core Thuban CPUs. However, contrary to previous reports, Advanti Online suggests the 2.8GHz Phenom II X6 will feature a 125W TDP, and not 95W as originally reported. For the enthusiast space, it seems AMD will also have a 3.2GHz part – the Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition. Judging by the name, the chip may be multiplier unlocked, and at under $300 could quickly become a favourite among enthusiast users.

German govt says no to Firefox

Mozilla says it’s already fixed the problem

THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT has warned citizens not to use Mozilla’s Firefox browser because of an inherent security flaw. The advice comes from the BürgerCERT, which itself comes from the less amusingly named Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik, or BSI for short. In its warning the BSI said, “There is an as yet unspecified vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox version 3.6. A remote attacker to execute using rigged websites the opportunity to inject malicious code in the context of the logged on user” (translation courtesy of Google Translate). It added that because the problem could allow for a hacker to take control of a user’s machine it was recommending the use of another browser until, that is, Firefox version 3.6.2 is released. In its own blog posting Mozilla credited security researcher Evgeny Legerov from Secunia for bringing the issue to its attention and promised to release a fixed version by 30 March. It has issued a patch for the problem, although it does involve a manual install, something that could be beyond some people’s skills.

Windows XP users will not be able to run the final version of Internet Explorer 9, according to Microsoft executives, cutting out a decade-old, yet still popular operating system. In fact, the Windows IE9 Platform Preview, as well as the final version, won’t run on anything but the latest Microsoft operating systems. Users trying to run the preview code on an XP system will receive the following dialogue box: “Windows Internet Explorer Platform Preview does not support any operating system earlier than Windows Vista SP2.” And of course, don’t even think about versions for non-Windows operating systems. IE General Manager Dean Hachamovitch told us that Mac and Linux versions weren’t currently in the company’s plans. The reason IE9 doesn’t work in XP is that it uses the Direct2D feature of DirectX when accessing the graphics hardware to accelerate image creation and drawing. Direct2D was introduced in Windows 7, but then added to Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2. But not to WIndows XP.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is staking its claim at powering the cloud through processors and hardware. ast week, at XChange Solution Provider in Los Angeles, AMD detailed its role in cloud computing and how it plans to get solution providers, software vendors, OEMs and hardware manufacturers up to speed on what is sure to be the next big thing. “The channel is really looking at ‘what does cloud computing mean to me for my business,’” said Margaret Lewis, AMD’s director of commercial solutions and software and worldwide product marketing. It’s silicon and processors that run the cloud, Lewis said, and AMD has become “an evangelist for cloud computing” despite being lower in the stack. As an evangelist, AMD said it is helping partners, OEMs and vendors understand the infrastructure needed to support the cloud and the new ways of conducting business that it introduces.

No copy-and-paste in Windows Phone 7 OS

Developers can implement their own clipboards within apps, but Microsoft is favoring contextual tapping instead

Microsoft revealed this week at its Mix10 conference for Microsoft-oriented Web developers that its forthcoming Windows Phone 7 mobile OS will not include a clipboard capability for copy-and-paste operations — at least not in the first version. “Windows Phone 7 Series will not initially offer copy-and-paste; instead, we try to solve the most common uses for copy-and-paste via single-tap action,” says Casey McGee, a senior marketing manager in Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business group. “For example, people often want to take an address and view it on a map, highlight a term in the browser, and do a search or copy a phone number to make a call. Instead of the user manually doing a copy and paste in these scenarios, we recognize those situations automatically and make them happen with just one touch. In our early testing, people have been pleased with this approach, but we’re always listening to feedback and will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear.”
