by Russ Frushtick Sept. 29,2010 THQ released the following statement regarding del Toro's quotes: "At THQ, we are focused on the highest level of creative development by putting artists first. Guillermo del Toro is one of many creative artists that we respect and would be interested in working with. However, at this time, we do not have any formal announcement to make. |
|
| "Back in July, director Guillermo del Toro confirmed with us that he is working on a series of games with a 'big company.' Shortly thereafter, the LA Times reported that sources close to the project were saying the company in question was THQ. We are now able to put speculation to rest, as del Toro has confirmed with MTV that he is, indeed, working on a project with THQ. "We're working together," said the director. "Hopefully everything will come together in the next few days and we can formally announce it and so forth. But we are talking about huge games, huge world creation and long deadlines." Fans of del Toro's work may be excited by the prospect of a video game helmed by the director, but it'll be a while before the project sees store shelves.

The companies are trying to integrate services; could be a blow to Google
By Sharon Gaudin September 29, 2010
Facebook is trying to work out a deal to integrate Skype's Internet phone service into the social network's site, according to reports. The deal, which is expected to be announced in the next few weeks, would enable Facebook users to have a voice chat and video chat with their Facebook friends using Skype services, according to the Wall Street Journal reported. The report cited unnamed sources. Neither Facebook nor Skype would comment on the reports. "I like this move for both companies," said Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group. "Facebook is all about communicating with friends, but they've fallen behind other services, like Google and Yahoo, when it comes to things like audio and video chat. Skype is a mature and fully featured service that can give Facebook even more functionality than their competitors." If the rumored move comes to fruition, Facebook would be firing back at Google, which announced last month that it would offer the ability to make phone calls over the Internet via its popular Gmail service. Google's move was a blow to Facebook, whose core service is pulling in users who want to connect online. It also was a slap at Skype, which has long dominated the market for Internet phone service. However, if the new deal goes through, both Facebook and Skype would be able to compete vigorously against Google.

Angel investor Dave McClure pointed out yesterday what is obvious to everyone but Google: Google needs to buy Twitter immediately. We've been urging Google to buy Twitter for more than 18 months now, and it would have cost the company a lot less if it had taken our advice 18 months ago. But whatever it costs Google to buy Twitter today is worth it. Here's why:* Facebook is emerging as a serious threat to Google's core business, and Twitter is the only "social" company Google can buy that might have a chance of combating this. Facebook will soon be the largest web site in the world, and people already spend a lot more time using Facebook than they spend using Google. Facebook is becoming a communications "desktop" that could eventually supplant Gmail (today's Facebook-Skype partnership will help.) There is a chance–still small–that Facebook will be able to develop a search product that starts siphoning some search revenue away from Google. There is also a chance that Facebook will begin to replace the browser and desktop for many folks, which could lead to Google having to pay Facebook for distribution. How exactly Facebook might eventually threaten Google isn't clear, but the possibility that it WILL threaten Google in some way increases every day. Google cannot buy Facebook. Everything else in the social sector is worthless. So Google needs to buy Twitter.

The new Apple TV could be Steve Jobs’ best sleight-of-hand trick yet.
By Brian X. Chen September 29, 2010
During his modest introduction of the device, Jobs called the Apple TV “one more hobby.” But a closer look at the code and the hardware powering the Apple TV reveals that there’s a lot more going on under the hood than the CEO shared. Interestingly, Jobs didn’t mention that Apple TV runs iOS, the same operating system running on its flagship product, the iPhone, and some other big hits — the iPod Touch and iPad. And there’s more, too: The Apple TV’s software might already be jailbroken, and some hidden software should eventually allow you to share the Apple TV’s media with other iOS devices. These secret ingredients could be the recipe Apple needs to shake up the television industry. For years, Apple executives have labeled the set-top box a “hobby” product because of its mild success compared to blockbuster sellers like the iPhone and iPod. Now that Apple TV has been revamped into a streaming rental service with an arsenal of stealth features, maybe Apple has a chance to change the TV business — if not today, perhaps later.

Still no official announcement from Treyarch, but it appears zombie Russians are coming.
By Mike Sharkey Sept. 28, 2010
There's little doubt gamers will get to unload on the undead in Call of Duty: Black Ops, but developer Treyarch is still tiptoeing around an official announcement or any specific details about the game's zombie mode.
Today, we get our best look yet at what's to come, and it appears the zombie virus has spread beyond the Third Reich. The Black Ops teaser site, GKNova6, previously home to cryptic messages about the game before it was officially announced, has been overrun by zombies. The viral site, which features a desk facing a stack of monitors, shows a number of different video clips. Piecing things together, it appears Treyarch is merging Nazi zombies from World at War with the Russians in Black Ops. That would jive with a recent statement Treyarch boss Mark Lamia made to Edge Magazine: "We continued to evolve [Nazi Zombies] after World At War – there was a dialogue going on with some of our hardcore community, and we were able to interact with the community and evolve — we did that with our zombie lore."
