We’ve been following the escalating conflict between Apple and Samsung, and now it’s taken a turn for the worse. Last week, Apple filed another patent lawsuit against Samsung in South Korea, once again claiming that Samsung had copied the design of the iPhone 3G. And there is absolutely no disputing that Samsung’s Galaxy line bears a strong resemblance to Apple products. Yesterday, Samsung responded by filing a complaint against Apple with the International Trade Commission (ITC), asking for ITC secretary James Holbein to investigate “certain mobile electronic devices, incluing wireless communication devices, portable music and data processing devices, and tablet computers.” By filing with the ITC, Samsung is requesting an import ban against the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. This could happen if the ITC decides that a patent is being infringed, and Florian Muller of Foss Patents believes that it’s highly likely that the ITC will proceed with the investigation against Apple.

Microsoft has developed technology to secretly intercept, monitor and record communications on voice over IP networks. With Skype soon to join the Microsoft family, it's likely the technology will play some kind of a role in the VOIP software going forward. Called "Legal Intercept" in the patent application, the technology is designed to silently record communications on VOIP networks, such as Skype, according to a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, publicized June 28. Current products would be modified to "cause the communication to be established via a path that includes a recording agent," Microsoft said in its patent application. There is no indication on how soon the U.S. Patent Office might act on Microsoft’s application. Legal Intercept seems similar to tools telecommunications companies already use to comply with the government's wiretap and surveillance requests, which currently do not work for VOIP communications.

Music star and actor Justin Timberlake has teamed up with a US advertising agency to buy Myspace for $35m (£22m) – just 6pc of the amount Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp paid for the business. The deal will see Mr Timberlake take a stake in the social networking site and shape its strategy alongside Specific Media, a California-based digital advertising agency. The price paid falls short of the $100m News Corp is believed to have wanted and is a fraction of the $580m that Mr Murdoch handed over for then then dominant site in 2005. The sale also crystallises the dramatic decline in a company that was founded in California in 2003 and just three years ago was still the world’s biggest social networking site. “There’s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favourite entertainers,” Mr Timberlake said. “I’m excited to help revitalise Myspace by using its scoal media platform to bring artists and fans together.”

The U.S. Supreme Court today reaffirmed the principle that the First Amendment protects free speech in the digital age, rejecting a 2005 California law that severely restricted the sale of "violent" video games to minors. The statute had been blocked from taking effect by lower court rulings in suits brought by industry representatives. Following today's decision by a 7-2 majority of the court, the law is now a dead letter. The decision was highly anticipated, and the result entirely expected. The decision in Brown v. EMA is the second in as many weeks from the high court protecting digital content under the First Amendment. Last week, the court invalidated a Vermont law (PDF) that prohibited the "sale, disclosure, and use of pharmacy records that reveal the prescribing practices of individual doctors." The state had argued that the information was not a form of speech but a "mere commodity," with "no greater entitlement to First Amendment protection than 'beef jerky.'" But the court rejected that narrow view of information. The data whose use Vermont sought to limit constituted facts about what drugs were being prescribed, and facts are clearly protected under the First Amendment. As the court concluded, "Facts, after all, are the beginning point for much of the speech that is most essential to advance human knowledge and to conduct human affairs."

Two ATX motherboards for now

Asus has revealed two of its first motherboards that will support the upcoming AMD A-Series Llano APUs, the F1A75-V EVO and F1A75-V Pro. Both motherboards use the ATX form factor and will be quite happy to run any of the FM1 socket AMD A-Series APUs. The feature list includes Asus' own Dual Intelligent Processors 2 technology with EPU and TPU engines as well as the DIGI+ VRM technology with 6+2 phase design, has support for AMD's Dual Graphics and CrossfireX, UEFI BIOS and Asus' AI Suite II. Asus didn't shed much details regarding the specs of the motherboard but it did state that the F1A75-V EVO is the world's first FM1 socket motherboard with dual x8/x8 PCI-Express for AMD CrossfireX support, as well as the fact that the entire range is designed to natively support the USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps. The only difference that we can visually see is that the F1A75-V EVO features a slightly different PCI slot configuration with three PCI-Express x16 slots, two PCI-Express x1 and two plain PCI slots while the Pro version replaces the last PCI-Express with a plain PCI slot.
