Apple today released OS X Lion to the masses, but only allowed customers to download the major OS revamp via the Mac App Store—no boxed versions were offered in Apple retail stores.
This will be the fate of many Mac applications starting today as the company aims to purge all boxed software from its retail stores. In a notice sent to resellers, Apple revealed that they are discontinuing the boxed versions for several applications including OS X Snow Leopard, iLife, iWork, and Aperture. Starting today, these software titles can only be purchased online via the Mac App Store, although resellers can still sell off their remaining inventory or return them to Apple. While the Logic Express and Logic Studio software titles will continue to have boxed versions, GarageBand Jam and Mac Box Set will be discontinued in all channels, meaning they’ll be axed even from the Mac App Store. Also completely discontinued today are any preinstalled configured-to-order software products.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc., expected to report its largest annual profit this year since 2000, may find its improving results overshadowed by the lack of progress in finding a new chief executive officer.
Six months after ousting Dirk Meyer over disagreements with the board about strategy, the Sunnyvale computer-chip maker is conducting a second round of interviews with a number of candidates, said two people with knowledge of the hiring process. AMD won't be ready to announce a new leader when it reports quarterly earnings on Thursday, said one of the people, who declined to be identified because the plans haven't been made public. Meyer's drive for better financial performance and on-time delivery of new products weren't enough for AMD's board, which pushed him out in January, saying the company wasn't gaining market share or getting into the mobile-phone or tablet chip markets quickly enough. The failure to name a new leader after more than six months is undermining investor confidence even as profitability picks up.

Xbox 720 hasn't been announced, and chip maker AMD (which supplied the graphics chip for 360) hasn't even confirmed that they're involved in the project,
but in the latest issue of OXM (thanks Examiner) AMD does heap tons of praise onto the next Xbox. Director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison, claimed that Microsoft's next console would actually feature graphics on par with James Cameron's epic 3D film Avatar. Not only that, but Robison indicated that Xbox 720's A.I. and physics would be so advanced that every individual character in an open world game like Grand Theft Auto would act independently; they'll be able to react in very different ways to your actions as a player rather than following some pre-determined script. Of course, for now this is just a lot of hype. Every time a new console is on the horizon, all sorts of wild claims are made about its power. The Xbox 720 is rumored to be unveiled at next year's E3, with a possible launch in 2013 or 2014.

HIts 3.6GHz even without liquid nitrogen cooling
by Gareth Halfacree on 18 July, 2011
AMD's A-series accelerated processing units, better known under the codename Llano, look to have some serious
head for overclocking if the results gained by a Japanese team of enthusiasts is anything to go by. Armed with little more than an AMD A8-3850 processor, which runs at 2.9GHz by default, a Gigabyte GA-A75-UD4H motherboard, and a cooler that runs on liquid nitrogen, the team were able to push the clock speed to just below 5GHz. Using the esoteric cooling technique – which requires that an open-top reservoir is kept topped up with liquid nitrogen from a nearby dewar – the team were able to convince the operating system to boot with the APU running at an impressive 4.906GHz. That speed, achieved using a core clock of 169.2MHz and a core voltage of 1.792V, will be out of the reach of most. The team was also, however, able to push the same combination to a speedy 3.6GHz using a much more reasonable air-based cooling system.

Some people have a very hard time trusting Facebook. After dozens of privacy problems over the years, they’ve grown extremely weary of what the company is doing with my personal information.
I, for one, rarely use Facebook anymore, beyond a rare comment or “Like.” My Facebook fears stem from the several instances when the company has added new features to the site and chose to automatically opt-in hundreds of millions of users, most of whom don’t even know they’ve been signed up for the new feature. I’ve also been sapped by the company’s hyper-confusing privacy policy, which requires users to navigate a labyrinth of buttons and menus when hoping to make their personal information private. For Facebook, these breaches on people’s personal privacy rarely result in any repercussions: the negative press is usually temporary, and users have mostly stayed with the service, saying that there isn’t a viable alternative social network to talk to family and friends. That is, until now. Enter Google+, which started last month and has already grown to 10 million users. Rather than focus on new snazzy features — although it does offer several — Google has chosen to learn from its own mistakes, and Facebook’s. Google decided to make privacy the No. 1 feature of its new service.

Some of you might be surprised to see a new face at the Hultsfred festival tonight when WITCHERY enter the stage to declare "Witchkrieg" over Sweden.
Commented WITHCERY guitarist Patrik Jensen (also in THE HAUNTED): "We are saddened to announce the departure of Legion (ex-MARDUK, DEVIAN), singer of last year's WITCHERY ear-crusher 'Witchkrieg'. Unfortunately, conflicting schedules made a continued collaboration impossible. We are very thankful for Legion's input and work on our latest album, and we wish him only the very best for the future. WITCHERY will, however, not remain without a leader to take them through the netherworlds and beyond. None other than Emperor Magus Caligula (ex-DARK FUNERAL) has decided to once again adorn his armor, and go off to battle for the better of darkness and evil." Stated Emperor Magus Caligula: "Getting an offer to play with some of Sweden's finest elite in metal, I just couldn't resist. Together with WITCHERY, I will once again spread chaos and hatred upon this world. The emperor is back, and together we will conquer ALL!!!" Fans in Finland, Germany and Norway can soon witness the power of Emperor Magus Caligula throat torture at the upcoming Tuska, Summer Breeze and Inferno festivals.

The rest waits for 28nm for quad
by Fuad Abazovic 15 July 2011
This week has definitely been kind to us when it comes to the future of phone / tablet chips. We have found out that Nvidia’s Kal El might be the only 40nm quad core in the market.
The rest of the phone elite will wait for 28nm to do the quad core, as the thermals go down significantly and two Cortex A15 cores can end up faster than four Cortex A9 40 / 45nm cores. So far Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and the rest of the phone / tablet chip manufacturers, including Samsung and Apple haven’t announced any Quad core Cortex A9 based 40 or 45nm quad chip. Nvidia is expected to ship its Kal-El and have it in designs in Q3 2011 or this current quarter. Most of the big chip manufacturers will have to wait for 28nm to make its chip. Our sources have indicated that Kal-El might be the biggest chip for tablets / phones so far, as it ends significantly bigger than Tegra 2. Tegra 2 should be some 49 sq mm while Kal El was reported to be close to 80 sq mm. Quad cores based on A15 should probably end up much closer to these 49 sq millimetre, but A15 28nm Quads will only ship at some point of 2012, most likely the second part of it. TI already said it will only happen with retail present of actually products in fall 2012 for OMAP 5.

Amazon to Broaden Hardware Offer with Tablets
by Anton Shilov 07/15/2011
Amazon plans to release its own-brand tablet device sometimes in October, according to a media report.
The rumours about the tablet from the world’s largest online store have been around for some time now, but the most interesting detail about the device is that it will be powered by Google Android operating system. At present nothing particular is known about Amazon’s tablet. What is known is that it will feature 9” – 10” touch-screen, a powerful application processor and will be based on Google Android operating system. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the device will be designed by one of the contract manufacturers of electronics, but its successor due in 2012 will be developed by Amazon itself. The introduction of Google Android-based tablet by Amazon clearly means that the company not only follows its competitor Barnes & Noble, which released its Android-based Nook Color electronic-book reader last year, but plans to compete against Apple iPad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab and other popular slates.
