We’ll just come right out and say it: Guitar Hero and Rock Band should watch their back, ’cause there’s a better-than-decent chance that Power Gig will be all the rage this holiday season. Seven45 Studios is a heretofore unheard of upstart with roots in First Act, and unlike the vast majority of game developers, these guys actually have a direct hand in the production of the software and hardware associated with this package. They’ll be designing the Power Gig video game series (Rise of the SixString is only the first installment) as well as the guitars, drums and microphones in-house, and given the First Act roots, you know you’ll be getting instruments of higher quality than what’s on the market today. Oh, and yes, we didn’t misspeak when we pluralized "guitars" and mentioned those other two devices.

Legendary guitarist and inventor Les Paul, who pioneered the design of solid body Gibson electric guitars that bore his name, died Thursday at a New York hospital of complications from pneumonia. He was 94. The rock ‘n’ roll icon was playing regular gigs at a New York City nightclub as recently as a few months ago until he began battling a series of illnesses that put him "in and out of the hospital," his attorney Michael Braunstein said."At 94, it’s hard to fight a lot of stuff," Braunstein said. "He’s a historical person. He certainly has left his mark here on Earth and had many, many friends."Paul had been a dominant force in the music business since World War Two. He and wife Mary Ford enjoyed a string of hits in the 1940s and 1950s that included "Mockin’ Bird Hill" and the influential "How High the Moon," which featured some of Paul’s recording innovations, such as multi-layered tracks.

Osbourne is suing Iommi for a 50 percent interest in the "Black Sabbath" trademark, along with a portion of Iommi’s profits from use of the name. The Manhattan federal court suit also charges that Osbourne’s "signature lead vocals" are largely responsible for the band’s "extraordinary success," noting that its popularity plummeted during his absence from 1980 through 1996. In a statement released this afternoon (Friday, May 29),Ozzy says about his decision to sue Iommi, "It is with great regret that I had to resort to legal action against my long-term partner Tony Iommi, but after three years of trying to resolve this issue amicably, I feel I have no other recourse.

THQ and Relic have released the Dawn of War II soundtrack for free. Available on the game’s official site, folks can either download all 20 tracks in one file or stream them individually. They’ve also included a soundtrack cover graphic, so those of you who want pretty pictures on your Ipods and Zunes have nothing to worry about. Also on the site is a fairly detailed explanation of how the soundtrack came together, written by Audio Lead Jason Ross. He notes that because of the way the adaptive music engine in DoW 2 works, players were "likely only hearing half the music." And because of the way they are edited and mixed for the game, they are not the way the composers intended. So, if you want to hear them how they were intended to be heard, get your download on.

Anthony Chowanec of All Metal Music conducted an interview earlier today (Thursday, November 20) with frontman Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer of German thrash metal veterans DESTRUCTION.

DESTRUCTION recently uploaded the song "Urge – The Greed Of Gain" featuring solos from Gary Holt (EXODUS) and Jeff Waters (ANNIHILATOR) alongside that of DESTRUCTION’s own Mike Sifringer.

Commented DESTRUCTION frontman Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer: "This is my favorite track on [the latest DESTRUCTION album] ‘D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.’! First of all a big ‘CHEERS’ to my three guitar heroes for the killer job! But I do not only love this thrashing tune cause of the amazing contribution from our good friends Jeff and Gary, also cause the track stands for an upgrade of our sound without losing the edge and our old school roots. Looking forward to play that new stuff live!"

Paul Friswold of the Riverfront Times recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. On the criticism that METALLICA’s new album, "Death Magentic", is over-compressed: The music lacks dynamic range, and is marred further by harsh digital clipping, an undesirable noise introduced during mastering:

"Well, it’s like this: There are people who just expect perfection from us. And I totally get that. And when it falls short of their standards of perfection, they’re going to complain. And I totally get that, too. I do hear a bit of clipping here and there. It was more a Rick Rubin [producer] sort of decision rather than the band decision, because he thought it made it sound a little bit more lively and dynamic, and we kinda gave him the benefit of the doubt on that. And you know, to me, when I crank the album when I’m driving, it’s not an issue for me. But then again — my ears are kinda fried, too, bro.
