Game Icon Epic Wins “Top Industry Driven Technology Company of the Year” Award
Tue 18 Nov 2008 - Filed under: Game News — J. TECH

The North Carolina Technology Association has awarded Epic Games with the prestigious title of "Best Industry-Drive Technology Company of the Year".

Epic Games, Inc. today announced that it has been recognized as the Top Industry Driven Technology Company of the Year by the North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA). Epic Games received its award at the annual NCTA 21 Awards gala last night at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary, N.C. The NCTA 21 Awards are recognized as North Carolina’s most prestigious awards, celebrating excellence in leadership and innovation. This accolade comes on the heels of Epic’s worldwide release of “Gears of War 2,” which sold over 2 million units in its first weekend at retail. Epic is known for its breakthrough “Gears of War” franchise, the multimillion-selling “Unreal” series of games, and Unreal Engine 3, the award-winning software development framework that serves as the technological foundation for many of today’s bestselling computer and video games. NCTA’s 21 Awards program is segmented into five categories: technology industry, stage of development, functional, leadership and excellence. Epic received a technology industry award in the new category of Top Industry Driven Technology Company of the Year for Unreal Engine 3’s positive impact on the entertainment software industry.

Epic has licensed Unreal Engine 3 to esteemed game developers and publishers including Electronic Arts, Microsoft, SEGA, Capcom, Take-Two Interactive, Square Enix and Activision. The engine is also used by world class architectural firm HKS to create functional 3D visualizations of architectural spaces like the new Dallas Cowboys football stadium and W Dallas Victory Hotel and Residences. In addition, Unreal Engine 3 is used to develop animated films and 3D training simulations for military, government and corporate initiatives. ..By Raptor Nov.15,2008

Movie Icon Guillermo del Toro Gives Hobbit Update
Sat 15 Nov 2008 - Filed under: Movie News — J. TECH
Source: Ryan Rotten
November 12, 2008

ComingSoon.net talked to director Guillermo del Toro about The Hobbit and its sequel last night at an event for the new Hellboy II: The Golden Army DVD.
He says they won’t start the casting process until they’ve finished writing: "Literally, like every week, what you discover writing the two movies, writing the two stories, it changes. So, every week there’s a discovery, and anything we say this week would be contradicted next week. Certainly that would be true in casting. Why create hopes or why create expectations if down the line you’re going to go, ‘You know what? That was not a good idea.’"
Regarding the creatures, he says there are so many more to be explored in "The Hobbit" films that were not explored in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. "We want to do a muscle-driven, radio-controlled suits for a couple of things. I already started that with Wink in ‘Hellboy II.’ Wink was pushed as far as we could within the time limits and the budget limits of the movie and we’re going to take what we learned and apply it.

Game Icon America’s Army AA3 screenshot comparisons
Fri 14 Nov 2008 - Filed under: Game News — J. TECH

by John Callaham Nov.13, 2008

In 2002 the US Army launched a free multiplayer first person shooter onto the Internet. Designed to be a PR and recuiting tool, America’s Army was a massive hit with gamers, even with those folks who had no interest in joining the military. The game was also notable for being the first title to use Epic GamesUnreal Engine 2 graphics engine,a few months before Epic itself released its own Unreal Engine 2 title, Unreal Tournament 2003. Since the release of the first version of the game on the PC, America’s Army has been improved with a number of additional missions (46 in all now), features and more added to the game. It has registered over 9 million players since its first release. However the game has still used the original Unreal Engine 2 technology. That will change in the near future when a new version of America’s Army, currently named AA3, is released. The title will finally switch over to use Epic’s next generation graphics technology, Unreal Engine 3.

While the Army Game Project has yet to reveal specific details on AA3, including a release date, they did send over a number of first look screenshots to Big Download that compare the visuals of one of the most popular maps in the game, Pipeline, in both its current and upcoming versions.

Music Icon Metallica’s Kirk Hammett: ‘I Do Hear A Bit Of Clipping’ On ‘Death Magnetic’
Wed 12 Nov 2008 - Filed under: Music News — J. TECH

By Blabbermouth.net Nov. 12, 2008

Paul Friswold of the Riverfront Times recently conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett. On the criticism that METALLICA’s new album, "Death Magentic", is over-compressed: The music lacks dynamic range, and is marred further by harsh digital clipping, an undesirable noise introduced during mastering:

"Well, it’s like this: There are people who just expect perfection from us. And I totally get that. And when it falls short of their standards of perfection, they’re going to complain. And I totally get that, too. I do hear a bit of clipping here and there. It was more a Rick Rubin [producer] sort of decision rather than the band decision, because he thought it made it sound a little bit more lively and dynamic, and we kinda gave him the benefit of the doubt on that. And you know, to me, when I crank the album when I’m driving, it’s not an issue for me. But then again — my ears are kinda fried, too, bro.
