BLACK SABBATH singer Ozzy Osbourne has commented on last month's announcement that his SABBATH bandmate, guitarist Tony Iommi, was diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphocytes, a type of cell that forms part of the immune system. According to a statement issued by his publicist, the 63-year-old metal legend is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan and remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.
"He needs more and more support, man," Ozzy said in an interview that will be broadcast later today on Ozzy's Boneyard, the new classic hard rock and metal music channel on SiriusXM Radio. "He doesn't have a brother, he doesn't have a sister — it's just him and his wife and the members of BLACK SABBATH. So any encouragement, any support [is appreciated]. He’s gonna beat it. What it’s down to is determination and believe me, this guy’s got more determination than anybody I’ve ever met. It’s gonna be fine. It’s just one of those trials in life that happen. When the bombshell [hit] about Tony’s cancer problem, I came to England [where Tony's doctors were treating him]. It would’ve been pretty bad if I would’ve stayed in L.A. When [producer] Rick Rubin found out [about Tony's cancer diagnosis], he said, 'I will accommodate wherever they are.' Which was very cool of him, actually. . . He's gonna beat it. He's got so much support, not only from each one of us in the band, but the fan base; it's unbelievable. It's one of them problems you have in life. . . He ain't gonna die, I'm telling you. I told him if he dies, I'm gonna kill him."

"My Heart Is Broken", the new video from EVANESCENCE, can be seen here. The clip was filmed on December 1 in Los Angeles with director Dean Karr, who has previously worked with IRON MAIDEN, OZZY OSBOURNE and MARILYN MANSON, among others.
EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee explained to MTV News that she drew inspiration for "My Heart Is Broken" from the 1988 British fantasy/horror film "Paperhouse", which stuck with her since she first saw it as a teen.
"[It's about] this girl, and everything that she would draw would come to life in her dreams, and she was creating this dream world for herself. And at first, it was cool, but then it's like this nightmare," she said. "So I sort of thought it would apply, and be cool, to have it be this dream that you're trapped in. So you're in a place that, at first, is a magical world, but at the same time, you're isolated and trapped there, and that's the reason you want to come back to reality after a time.
"We're playing with fiber optics, and so it's basically like I'm drawing the world around me from nothingness, and when I draw things with my hands, it's like they actually come to life," she continued. "So it's a lot of fun with creating this surreal dream world, and the guys' performance is sort of like the dream within the dream, in an abyss of darkness; it's very cool."

BLACK SABBATH's official Facebook page has been updated with a message about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band's new album following the revelation earlier this month that guitarist Tony Iommi was diagnosed with cancer.
"The guys have moved writing sessions from Los Angeles to Birmingham, England," the message reads. "SABBATH has gone back to where it all started and it’s been just amazing. This is where the writing of the album will be completed. Funny how it all goes full circle sometimes.
BLACK SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler last week wrote on his web site, "Today (January 19) we got the engines back up and running at Tony's home studio. Far from being down and depressed about his lymphoma diagnosis, Tony had already written the music for two new songs, and I must say it has given us all a kick up the rump — it's great to hear him churning out those riffs again, assuaging the Demon C."
Butler continued, "Takes more than that to stop Tony. Can't wait for you all to hear our workings; it has been great working on this stuff." He added, "I want to thank the lovely encouraging emails sent to this site giving Tony love and encouragement and great vibes. It really does help, not only Tony, but us as a band — it raises up our spirits and restores our faith in this tarnished world."
Iommi himself told The Pulse Of Radio shortly before his illness was diagnosed, that at the age of 63 he was busier than ever: "There's more than ever. You expect to sort of slow down at this time of life, but it's gone absolutely berserk. And it's great, I love it, being approached by different people to do projects — and well-known people. It's quite exciting."

Finnish female-frontmed metallers BATTLE BEAST recently inked a deal with Nuclear Blast Records.

The band's debut album, "Steel" — which was originally released in Finland earlier this year via Hype Records — will be made available internationally on January 27. Formed in 2008, BATTLE BEAST won the Wacken Open Air Metal Battle contest in Finland last year, enabling the band to perform at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany and represent its home country in the international Metal Battle finals. The group beat out 26 other acts from all around the world, which led to a record deal with the world's biggest independent heavy metal label. Commented Andy Siry, head of A&R at Nuclear Blast: "Young, dynamic but still deeply rooted in traditional heavy metal, BATTLE BEAST breathe new life into the scene and rekindle the sound of the '80s with a fulgent livery. The well-deserved victory at the Wacken Open Air Metal Battle 2010 was the first important step to which we want to live up by supporting these up-and-coming talents energetically. We're looking forward to the cooperation!" Added BATTLE BEAST guitarist Anton: "We feel honoured that Nuclear Blast show their interest in BATTLE BEAST by releasing 'Steel'. Many thanks to our partners, closest people and most of all to our fans who believed in us and gave us their support. The journey continues!"

One of the most influential artists in rock history made a significant contribution today to help support music programs in public schools.

The legendary Eddie Van Halen donated 75 electric guitars from his personal collection to the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports music education in public schools across the country. Per Van Halen's request, the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation will distribute the guitars to music programs in public schools throughout the Los Angeles area where there are not enough instruments to meet the demand of students enrolled. “Music is the universal language," said Eddie Van Halen. "It has the ability to transcend and convey every human emotion that exists without saying a word. Music kept me off the streets and out of trouble and gave me something that was mine that no one could take away from me. Music education and families are dealing with the economic times, and I wanted to help them. If I can help a kid discover a liking, or even a passion for music in their life, then that's a wonderful thing. Music has provided a good life for me and hopefully it can help make life better for others with this donation."

Having made one of 2011's most impressive rock'n'roll comebacks that included the September 13 release of the band's long-awaited new album, "Worship Music", that landed on boatloads of "Best Of 2011" lists, metal masters ANTHRAX will keep the pedal to the metal in 2012. The band launches the New Year with the delivery to radio of a second single from "Worship Music", "I'm Alive", and plans to tour extensively beginning January 22 with round two of a U.S. co-headline tour with fellow thrash titans TESTAMENT.
"Worship Music" sold 28,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 12 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band's previous studio CD, 2003's "We've Come For You All", opened with just under 10,000 units to debut at No. 122. The CD cover artwork was handled by renowned comic book artist Alex Ross, who has worked with Marvel Comics and DC Comics and is known for his "Marvels", "Kingdom Come", and "Astro City" illustrations. Ross also did the original artwork for ANTHRAX's "We've Come For You All" and "Music Of Mass Destruction" albums.

'I'm No Spring Chicken,' Says Ex-Journey Singer, Who Is Working on New Music at 'Own Pace'
by Gary Graff, January 04, 2012
Steve Perry knows "it's been a long time, for sure" — since 1998, actually — since the world's heard any new music from the former Journey frontman.
But after "navigating" Journey's new "Greatest Hits Vol. 2" and a vinyl reissue of his 1984 solo album "Street Talk," Perry tells Billboard.com he's planning to get to work in earnest in a studio he's just finishing in his southern California home just north of San Diego, which he says will have a control room and "a tracking room about the size of Motown."
"I'm finishing that room up and I've written a whole bunch of ideas and directions, all over the map, in the last two, three years," says Perry, who was with Journey from 1977-98. "So I plan on getting in the studio at some point and start trying to track these things and see where they go." There's no formal timetable, however. "I don't want it to have pressure," Perry explains, "because I'll worry about it sucking, and then what am I gonna do? I've got all this pressure… that I just don't want on me, so I've allowed myself the ability to sketch and write as I go, and I'll do it at my own pace." Perry adds that he'd also "love to" play live again but adds that, at 62, "I'm no spring chicken. The same arthritis that ate up my left hip that finally got replaced hasn't stopped there… And touring is a lot of work. I'm impressed when I see people like Eric Clapton out there. Gee whiz, Eric, give me a break! It's amazing. I know it's gotta hurt somewhere."

Dutch symphonic metallers EPICA have set "Requiem For The Indifferent" as the title of their fifth full-length album, due on March 9, 2012 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Gate Studio in Wolfsburg, Germany under the watchful eye of Sascha Paeth.
Commented the band: "This title refers to the end of an era. Mankind can no longer stick their head in the sand for the things that are happening around us. We are facing many challenges. There is an enormous tension between different religions and cultures, wars, natural disasters and a huge financial crisis, which is getting out of control. More than ever we will need each other to overcome these problems. As we are all connected; the universe, earth, nature, animals and human beings, this period in time will be the prelude to the end for those who still don't want to, or simply won't see it. 'A Requiem For The Indifferent', but also a possibility for a new beginning with great new chances!"
A CD-release party for the new EPICA album will be held on March 16, 2012 at 013 in Tilburg, Netherlands.

MACHINE HEAD guitarist Phil Demmel walked off stage after being hit by a flying shoe during the final song of the band's headlining concert at Vorst Nationaal in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday (November 29).
Fan-filmed video footage of the incident can be seen below.
MACHINE HEAD's setlist was as follows:
01. I Am Hell
02. Be Still And Know
03. Imperium
04. Beautiful Mourning
05. The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears
06. Locust
07. This Is The End
08. Aesthetics of Hate
09. Old
10. Darkness Within
11. Bulldozer
13. Ten Ton Hammer
14. Who We Are
Encore:
15. Halo
16. Davidian
MACHINE HEAD's "The Eighth Plague Tour" with BRING ME THE HORIZON, DEVILDRIVER and DARKEST HOUR kicked off on November 1 in Oslo, Norway and is scheduled to wrap tonight (Thursday, December 1) in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg.
MACHINE HEAD's new album, "Unto The Locust", sold more than 17,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 22 on The Billboard 200 chart — putting MACHINE HEAD in the Top 25 for the first time in the band's 17-year history. Even more impressively, this is the third consecutive album to show at least a 20 percent increase in sales over its predecessor, a virtually unprecedented feat for any band or artist, let alone a metal band in 2011. Add to that the fact that MACHINE HEAD's last CD came out four and a half years ago, a period of time that has seen the music market drop by more than 45 percent, and you're looking at something amazing.
MACHINE HEAD has consistently averaged more than 100,000 copies sold in the U.S. for each of its seven albums and has shifted double that overseas (accruing several silver records in the U.K.), resulting in cumulative worldwide sales of more than 2.4 million.
