AMD, HP Nab Wins in Supercomputer Rankings
By Andy Patrizio November 17, 2008
In the cartoons, the Road Runner always managed to fend off the Coyote. On the latest Top 500 supercomputer list, the Roadrunner managed to hold off a Jaguar. Roadrunner, the Los Alamos National Laboratory supercomputer and the first to break the petaflop (define) barrier, held on to the top spot of the Top 500 list of supercomputers, just ahead of a Cray XT5 supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory called Jaguar. While IBM built Roadrunner and Cray built Jaguar, AMD powers both. The company's long-delayed Barcelona processors run the two fastest computers in the world and seven of the top 10. Two of the top 10 supercomputers use IBM POWER processors, and only one, the new Pleiades system built by NASA, SGI and Intel, uses Xeon. The rankings are maintained by the TOP500 project at its Top500.org, and are compiled twice a year by computer researchers in the U.S. and Europe.

Microsoft Co-Prez Warned Colleagues 'Vista Capable' Was Misleading
Senior executives inside the software maker questioned a decision to lower hardware specs for Vista PCs, e-mails show.
By Paul McDougall November 18, 2008
Former Microsoft co-president Jim Allchin called the company's decision to allow PC manufacturers to label machines not capable of running all of Windows Vista's features as Vista Capable "terrible" and "misleading," according to new e-mails unearthed Monday as part of a consumer fraud suit against the company. "I believe we are going to be misleading customers with the Capable program," Allchin wrote in an e-mail to a group of Microsoft product executives. PC makers "will say a machine is Capable and customers will believe that it will run all the core Vista features," wrote Allchin, in the April, 2006 message. Other e-mails entered earlier as evidence in the case show that Microsoft had previously lowered the specifications for a Vista Capable PC in order to appease Intel, whose 915 graphics chipset was not capable of running Vista's slick, 3-D Aero interface. "The fact that Aero won't be there EVER for many of these machines is misleading to customers," wrote Allchin, who retired from Microsoft as soon as Vista debuted in January of 2007. He added that he felt the Vista Capable program was "wrong for customers." The e-mails have been entered into evidence in a class action lawsuit that accuses Microsoft of deceptive marketing practices. The plaintiffs contend that Microsoft intentionally duped customers by advertising as Vista Capable computers that lacked the horsepower to fully support Vista.

Microsoft chopping Zune prices
by Ina Fried November 18, 2008
With the economy tanking and the holidays looming, Microsoft is hoping to salvage some Zune sales by chopping prices. The software maker plans to announce on Wednesday a price cut for its flash-based models. The 4GB version will drop to $99, the 8GB model will drop by $10 to $139, and the 16GB model will sell for $179, down from $199. Microsoft is also cutting prices for several of its Zune accessories. The cuts take effect on Wednesday in the U.S. and on Friday in Canada. Zune marketing director Adam Sohn said in an interview on Tuesday that the moves were being made to "ensure hopefully we have a good holiday season." The prices put Zune's flash players cheaper than a similar capacity iPod Nano, though Sohn said that wasn't the explicit goal of the price cuts.

AMD's Dragon platform 40% better than Spider?
By Cameron Wilmot 18th November 2008
More leaked AMD documents recently surfaced online and this time we get our first look at the upcoming AMD Dragon platform, which is set to replace the Spider platform. The Spider platform was a marketing initiative created by AMD to generate interest towards its original Phenom processor, 790FX motherboard and Radeon HD3800 series graphics cards. AMD’s Dragon platform, clearly more powerful than a mere spider, is set to become the new gaming platform for AMD in 2009, if leaked documents seen by our editors are to believed. The Dragon platform includes the Phenom II processor, new and revamped 790 series motherboards and Radeon HD4800 series graphics hardware. AMD is claiming in internal documents that its upcoming Dragon platform will be up to 40% faster in gaming than the previous Spider systems.

Adobe Positions Flash For Multiple Devices
Adobe sees its technology as the interface layer that can take content and format it for use on screens of all sizes.
By Thomas Claburn November 17, 2008
Adobe is going to great lengths to show how its software can adapt to displays of all shapes and sizes. The company's MAX 2008 conference opened in San Francisco on Monday with a brief performance by DJ Mike Relm. His turntable scratching spun video loops forward and back on the Moscone West auditorium wall in time with the music. "This is the 'wow' moment," one person in the projected montage explained in an attempt to convey the communicative might of video technology. It was more of a "why" moment: Why would Adobe want to subject anyone looped amateur videos without the alcohol necessary to appreciate onscreen people repeating sentences over and over to a mechanical beat? But Adobe was aiming for a "how" moment: How the company's software can help designers and developers create content for a world with many screens.

TiVo Debuts TV-Powered Pizza Ordering -- So What's Next?
By JR Raphael, Nov 17, 2008
TiVo has unveiled new technology that lets you order pizza over your TV. It has the potential to make us fatter, lazier, and more sedentary than ever -- and I couldn't be more excited. The service, announced this week, is now available to anyone with a broadband-connected TiVo box, an active TiVo subscription, and a Domino's in the neighborhood. You'll find the option in the "Music, Photos, Products, & More" menu on the TiVo main screen. Pick your pizza, input your address, and your dinner (or snack?) is on the way. You have to pay cash when the driver arrives, as there's no credit card option available in the system yet.

Finalized speedy USB 3.0 spec debuts
by Brooke Crothers November 17, 2008
25GB in 70 seconds. That's the torrid transfer rate consumers can expect with devices based on the USB 3.0 specification, which debuted Monday. As reported previously, the USB Promoter Group finalized the "SuperSpeed" USB 3.0 specification today and is doing a "comprehensive review" of the technology at a conference in San Jose, Calif. Intel, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, and NEC are the leading players in the group. Among the initial devices, external solid-state (flash) drives and hard drives are expected to be popular. "The first SuperSpeed USB devices will likely include data storage devices such as flash (solid-state drives), external hard drives, digital music players, and digitial cameras," the group said. Products aren't coming until 2010, however. "It is anticipated that initial SuperSpeed USB discrete controllers will appear in the second half of 2009 and consumer products will appear in 2010," according to the group.

Asus to Launch World's 'Fastest' Smartphone
By Jeff Bertolucci, Nov 17, 2008
Asus is calling its new P565 smartphone the "fastest business PDA phone in the world." It's too early to check that claim and the phone's not available yet for testing - but when has that stopped a company from bragging? The Asus P565 does indeed have some impressive specs with an 800MHz Marvell processor. That should give the Windows Mobile OS-based smartphone ample power to multitask a number of Microsoft Mobile Office apps at the same time. The 2.8-inch 480 x 640 touchscreen is a decent size for navigating the Glide (iPhone-like) touch interface, which runs Windows Mobile 6.1 OS. Given the amount of wasted space on the P565's front, however, I'd like to see a larger display.

Nvidia loses market share to AMD
Despite being forced to slash prices
By Sylvie Barak: Wednesday, 12 November 2008
GRAPHICS ADD-IN BOARDS are doing rather well under the economic circumstances claims a new report by graphics analyst, Jon Peddie, who also reckons AMD’s new graphics chips are grabbing market share away from Nvidia. A new report released today reckons there’s been an increase in AIB shipments, with overall shipments up by 17.8 per cent (sequentially) and unit shipments for AIBs up 11per cent to 21.9 million. Despite being up sequentially, however, graphics add-in board unit shipments were down year-to-year. Nvidia was also probably feeling a bit down, after taking a bit of an AMD pounding. According to Peddie, "AMD has by all accounts exceeded expectations with its Radeon HD 4000 series," and the firm’s aggressive pricing has also had an impact, causing prices of AIBs to drop.

LCD Makers Settle Price-fixing Charges, Agree to Fines
By Grant Gross Nov 12, 2008
Three electronics manufacturers -- LG Display, Sharp and Chunghwa Picture Tubes -- have agreed to plead guilty and pay a combined US$585 million in criminal fines for conspiring to fix the prices of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday. LG will pay $400 million of the fines, which is the second-highest fine ever imposed by the DOJ's Antitrust Division, the DOJ said. The DOJ filed the price-fixing charges in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco Wednesday. The companies, in agreeing to settle the charges, also agreed to cooperate with the DOJ's ongoing antitrust investigation. Thin-Film Transistor LCD panels are used in computer monitors and laptops, television sets, mobile phones, and other electronic devices. In 2006, the worldwide market for TFT-LCD panels was approximately $70 billion, the DOJ said. Companies directly affected by the LCD price-fixing conspiracies are some of the largest computer, television and cellular telephone manufacturers in the world, including Apple, Dell and Motorola, the DOJ said in a press release.
