When the first Darkness was released, back in the summer of 2007, the game received just enough attention to eventually justify a sequel, but it was soon buried by the 2007 blowout that included games such as Halo 3, CoD: Modern Warfare, Bioshock, Mass Effect, and The Orange Box. The bland shooting was partially to blame for being buried, but the intriguing darkness mechanics and dark story (not to mention a trip to Purgatory filled with WWI zombie soldiers) kept this game in many games enthusiasts’ minds. Now, after five years and a developer switch, The Darkness has returned with The Darkness II. Even a one-sentence summary, such as “This is about a mobster who gains the power of The Darkness, an evil that has existed since the first murder,” is intriguing. How does someone handle something as serious as the mob being twisted by a dark, supernatural being? The Darkness’ answer was “make it dark,” and The Darkness II continues that trend.
